Elias Voss, the Vessel
Age: 17 • Civilian apprentice mechanic
Elias repairs industrial pumps and railway equipment in a Veyran border town. He is observant, stubborn and protective of the people around him, but he has no particular desire to become a hero.
He has grown up watching governments sacrifice ordinary people for strategic objectives. He distrusts military authority, yet he is fascinated by machines because they follow rules that people often refuse to follow.
Inner conflict: Elias believes a person should be judged by their own choices. Eren's memories threaten to make him question whether his choices truly belong to him.
Critical rule: Elias is not Eren pretending to be a new boy. His personality, relationships and decisions are genuinely his own.
Dr. Mara Senn, the Researcher
Age: 32 • Meridian biological researcher
Mara is part of the expedition that uncovers Mnemonic Matter. She believes scientific discoveries should be independently verified, but her laboratory depends on military funding.
She initially treats Elias as a possible neurological case. When the evidence begins contradicting her own findings, she must choose between protecting her career and exposing the experiment that helped trigger the crisis.
Inner conflict: She wants the truth, but she fears what happens when the truth becomes a weapon.
Commander Adrian Vale, the Custodian
Age: 46 • Directorate intelligence
Vale oversees a classified programme investigating historical Titan phenomena. He is neither a fanatic nor a sadist. He believes the survival of millions sometimes requires decisions that individuals cannot morally accept.
His orders eventually lead him towards Elias.
Inner conflict: Vale fears the return of Titan power so deeply that he is prepared to create the conditions for its return in order to ensure his nation controls it first.
Nera Sol, the Witness
Age: 19 • Veyran field medic
Nera treats casualties from the first border engagements. She sees the cost of the war before the political leaders who initiated it ever have to confront the consequences.
She becomes Elias's closest connection to the human reality of the conflict. She does not care whether the old Titan legends are true until their consequences begin appearing among her patients.
Inner conflict: She wants to save people, but Elias's growing ability to interfere with death threatens the meaning she has built around survival, grief and letting people go.
### The legacy characters
Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and the other figures from the original story should not all appear immediately.
Their absence is important.
We will first encounter them through damaged records, contradictory accounts, memorials and memories. When one of them finally returns through the Paths, the appearance must matter to the plot and to Elias's understanding of himself.
I propose that Armin's memories are among the first recognisable traces Elias encounters, but Armin himself should not be the first person fully resurrected. We need to earn that moment.
Mikasa's legacy should remain especially delicate. Her life and final act in the original ending must not be reduced to a mechanism for bringing Eren back. Her choice mattered precisely because she could love Eren and still accept that he had to die.
That truth should become a central moral challenge for Elias.
### VIII. The major twist: the nations already knew
This needs to be the sequel's most carefully prepared revelation.
The twist should not be that every government has secretly possessed Titans for centuries. That would make the world's history feel artificial and would diminish the significance of the original ending.
Instead, the truth is more disturbing.
The rival nations have been preparing for the return of the Titans because each inherited a different piece of evidence that the others do not possess.
They do not share a complete theory. They do not trust one another. And some of their most important conclusions are wrong.
### The three pieces of the secret
CLUE ONE
The Directorate's missing report
An intelligence archive contains testimony describing biological structures that reacted to a person's presence rather than to conventional physical stimuli. The report was classified because it could not be independently verified.
Vale's superiors have quietly maintained a contingency plan for a phenomenon they publicly insist no longer exists.
CLUE TWO
Asteria's forbidden shipping ledger
An old maritime ledger records a series of secret transfers between research institutions during an earlier period of political tension. The cargo descriptions were falsified, but the dates correspond to unexplained disappearances of historical specimens.
Asteria believes the Directorate has been hiding a biological weapon. It does not know that some of the material was never a weapon in the conventional sense.
CLUE THREE
Meridian's original research charter
Meridian's oldest institutional records contain a peculiar clause: certain discoveries concerning inherited biological memory must be reported to a designated military authority, regardless of the researcher's citizenship.
The clause predates the modern Union. Nobody can explain why it was included, and its author is missing from the surviving records.
### The reveal
These clues eventually point to a secret historical agreement formed after an earlier series of discoveries.
Its provisional name is the Ash Covenant.
The Covenant was not a single organisation that controlled the world. It was an emergency arrangement between competing governments, established after each independently encountered evidence suggesting that the Titan phenomenon might not have ended in the way history claimed.
The parties agreed to three things:
* Preserve the most dangerous records outside public institutions.
* Prevent any one nation from obtaining an exclusive advantage from the discoveries.
* Prepare contingency plans in case the phenomenon returned.
The agreement gradually became distorted. New governments inherited its restrictions without understanding the original evidence. Some agencies began treating contingency research as a race for supremacy. Others concealed information because they believed disclosure would cause panic or provoke war.
By 399 A.E., the Covenant's original purpose has been almost entirely lost.
Its members are now competing to solve a problem they helped keep secret.
And when the first anomalous events occur, each government interprets them as evidence that a rival has already made a breakthrough.
This makes the war more dangerous: the Titan crisis is not simply arriving during a global conflict. The conflict is already being shaped by the fear of the Titans returning.
### The deeper twist
Later, we discover that the Covenant's earliest surviving document does not describe a weapon, a specimen or a research programme.
It describes a warning.
The warning was written before the modern nations existed. It predicts neither an exact date nor a particular boy. Instead, it describes a recurring pattern: when human beings attempt to exploit the ancient network, its activity begins to increase.
The document's final line has been partially destroyed.
Only a fragment remains:
“When the dead are called to serve the living, the living will inherit…”
We should not complete that sentence too early.
The reader will initially assume it warns of the resurrection cost. Much later, its real meaning may prove to be about something larger: the way the memories and choices of the dead can begin governing the decisions of the living.
### IX. The foreshadowing ledger
A major twist is only satisfying when the clues were present before the reveal. We should keep a continuity ledger to prevent accidental contradictions and make sure every clue has a purpose.
| Early clue | Initial interpretation | Later meaning |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Elias sketches unfamiliar branching paths | A recurring nightmare | His mind is responding to the network |
| Meridian's experiments produce synchronised brain activity | Experimental contamination | The first measurable reconnection to the Paths |
| The Directorate maintains a dormant containment protocol | Military bureaucracy | The government has inherited evidence of a possible Titan return |
| Asteria's shipping records contain falsified cargo descriptions | Corruption or espionage | Earlier nations secretly transferred unexplained biological material |
| Elias knows where an explosion will occur | Trauma or coincidence | A memory from Eren's life overlaps with his present |
| An old report describes a structure reacting to a person's presence | An unreliable historical account | The ancient phenomenon was never purely passive |
| A returned figure remembers an event from after their death | A resurrection anomaly | The Paths may connect memories beyond ordinary chronology |
| The Covenant's warning is incomplete | Lost historical detail | The most important danger concerns the living inheriting the dead's unfinished conflicts |
These clues should not all be explained in one chapter. Some will be separated by entire arcs, and a few will initially appear unrelated.
We should also allow characters to draw the wrong conclusions for understandable reasons. A clue is more interesting when it can support more than one interpretation until further evidence arrives.
### X. The long-form story structure
The story should grow from a grounded war drama into a supernatural tragedy. The Titans should arrive late enough that their return changes the genre of the story rather than simply fulfilling its premise.
Arc I: The World Before the Monster
Foundation and escalation
We follow Elias's ordinary life, the growing war, the lives of civilians and the political decisions that bring the nations into conflict. Meridian's excavation begins in the background. The supernatural remains ambiguous.
Arc ending: Elias experiences a memory that no living person could have transmitted to him.
Arc II: The Mnemonic Project
Discovery and concealment
Mara investigates the experimental anomalies. Vale receives reports from intelligence sources. Elias's dreams become more specific, but his identity remains his own.
Arc ending: A classified document links Meridian's findings to the old Titan era.
Arc III: The War of Certainty
Espionage and paranoia
The major powers begin interpreting the scientific anomalies as evidence of enemy weapons programmes. Espionage, sabotage and retaliatory attacks intensify. Elias is drawn into events without understanding why he matters.
Arc ending: The first undeniable biological event occurs, but no one agrees on what it means.
Arc IV: The First Return
Horror and moral consequence
Elias unknowingly establishes a connection to the dead. The first apparent resurrection is incomplete, terrifying and costly. The reader learns that returning a person is not the same as restoring a life.
Arc ending: Someone recognises the returned figure, and the historical implications cannot be concealed.
Arc V: The Titans of the New Age
Military catastrophe
Nations confront the reality of the Titan power in a world equipped to fight it. Military technology can inflict tremendous damage, but the connection to the Paths complicates every victory. Elias begins to understand the identity carried within him.
Arc ending: The war's original political objectives are overtaken by the struggle to control, destroy or exploit the returning power.
Arc VI: The Ash Covenant
Historical revelation
The rival nations' archives finally converge. The Covenant's purpose, the limits of their knowledge and the consequences of centuries of secrecy are revealed. Eren's memories become clearer, but Elias's own identity is endangered.
Arc ending: The apparent solution to the war would recreate the very conditions that allowed the Titan era to become a catastrophe.
Arc VII: The Continuous Cycle
Identity, freedom and final choice
Elias must decide what to do with the power that could end the immediate conflict. The returning dead have their own motives. Eren's memories do not necessarily agree with Elias's conscience. Humanity's survival may require surrendering the very power that could save it.
Arc ending: The cycle reaches a decision, not merely another battle.
These are structural destinations, not a demand to race through seven arcs. Each one may contain many chapters. We should let the characters and evidence determine the pace.
### XI. The rules of continuity
To keep the sequel coherent, these principles are now part of our working story bible.
1\. The original ending stands. Eren dies, Mikasa's choice remains meaningful, and the Titan powers disappear as the original story establishes. Their later return requires a new causal mechanism.
2\. Elias is his own person. He does not begin with Eren's complete memories, powers, motives or knowledge. His identity must develop through experience and choice.
3\. The world war has independent causes. Resource competition, alliances, military planning and political failures create the conflict. The Titans intensify it rather than retroactively causing every historical event.
4\. No nation knows everything. Each faction possesses partial evidence and competing interpretations. The conspiracy works through fragmented knowledge, institutional inertia and fear, not universal coordination.
5\. Technology has limits. Armies depend on fuel, transport, communication and supply. Scientific breakthroughs require time, resources, verification and human labour.
6\. Resurrection is not a free reset. It costs Elias, affects others connected to the network and creates moral consequences that cannot simply be undone.
7\. Memories are not perfect explanations. Eren's memories can reveal events and feelings, but they cannot automatically explain four centuries of history or tell Elias what he should do.
8\. Every major revelation has prior evidence. The story may mislead the reader, but it should not rely on information invented at the last moment to make a twist work.
9\. The dead are characters, not weapons. Anyone who returns must possess some degree of agency. Their loyalty to Elias is not automatic, and their experience of death matters.
10\. The central theme is freedom under inheritance. The question is not simply whether Elias can stop the war. It is whether he can choose a future without allowing the past to dictate every action.
### XII. What we should develop next
Before writing the opening chapter, I recommend that we complete the pre-war chronology of 360–399 A.E. This is where the world becomes convincing: the treaties that fail, the industrial discoveries that change military planning, the decisions that make escalation seem reasonable, and the secret research programmes that unknowingly converge.
We should then establish Elias's family, home, work, friendships and ordinary routines before anything supernatural happens to him. When his first memory finally surfaces, the reader should care about the boy whose life it disrupts.
The Titans can wait.
The first true horror is a world in which millions of ordinary people are preparing to kill one another, while a handful of powerful institutions are quietly preparing for the return of something they cannot understand.
And beneath all of it, something ancient has begun to remember.](https://media.mangamaker.com/814239ba-bc43-4279-8778-4050a3e3b2c7.png)

_Panel 3:_ _Bottom left screen. Audio crackling. Lab-side._
_DR. HARLAN BOSE - Xenobiology, Age 51_
_Studies alien DNA. This isn’t alien. Aliens have rules. This is worse._
_Internal Monologue Caption:_ `We’ve run 1,400 protocols. He breaks them all. He’s getting stronger. And angrier.`
_Career on the line. Mortgage on the line. Sanity? Already gone._
_Forcing a smile. Sweat on lens. His tie is on backwards and he hasn’t noticed._
_BOSE:_ "We’ve finally found a breakthrough! _Humanity 2.0!_ We just... can’t stabilize him. Or contain him. Or look at him directly without getting a migraine."
_Panel 4:_ _Close on DR. VALKS. Geneva. Ruby ring taps wine glass once. Soft. _tink_. Her other 11 screens flinch in unison anyway._
_VALKIS, eyes locked on Specimen M-257. Fingers steepled. Studies him like art. Smile small. Seductive. But there’s FRUSTRATION in it now. And HUNGER:_ "Excellent..." _voice like warm honey_ "...all those years of waiting. I’m so close. I can feel it. The key is right there—"
_Panel 5:_ _Small panel. Tank. Lab-side. The black ink inside forms a MIDDLE FINGER for 1 frame. Then disperses. Boy’s eye twitches. He heard that. Valkis sees it. Her smile twitches. She’s losing patience._
---
*- THE PROBLEM - HE’S PURE CHAOS, NO BALANCE_*
_Panel 1:_ _DR. BOSE cuts in. Panic. Career suicide. His screen glitches so hard his face duplicates._
_BOSE:_ "um...well...ma'am. It's fair to say we can't stabilise him considering the rate at which he's adapting. He's entire morphology doesn’t follow logic. It's as if he’s a virus to reality itself"
_Panel 2:_ _VALKIS. Smile doesn’t vanish. It FREEZES. Room temperature in the lab drops 20 degrees. A nearby crystal decanter on her desk CRACKS._
_VALKS:_ "...explain." _Soft. Deadly._
_Panel 3:_ _BOSE, pointing at screen. Charts flashing `ERROR: CHAOS.EXE HAS NO OFF SWITCH`._
_BOSE:_ "He may be the perfect specimen but there’s just one problem. _He’s pure chaos._ There’s no control. No balance. No correction. And he’s getting worse every day."
_Panel 4:_ _SPLASH PANEL of test results. Gruesome. Funny. Tragic. Lab footage._
`MONKEY + SPECIMEN M INK = MONKEY NOW HAS 7 SHADOWS, ALL OF THEM ANGRY` _Art: monkey screeching, shadows attacking scientists_
`DOG + SPECIMEN M INK = DOG IS NOW A CONCEPT` _Art: leash floating, empty collar, barking from ceiling_
`HUMAN + SPECIMEN M INK = VOID` _Art: Empty suit. Black stain shaped like The Spot’s portal. Suit is giving a thumbs up somehow._
_Panel 5:_ _BOSE, sweating, pulling up live feed: Test Chamber 3. They dropped 1ml of M-257’s ink in. The room is now a M.C. Escher painting. Gravity is sideways. A scientist is screaming in binary._
_BOSE:_ "We can’t weaponize him, ma’am. When his ink interacts with stable matter, it doesn’t integrate—it _invades_. Forces instantaneous chaos at a quantum level. The host reality can’t stabilize. Total synthetic failure occurs within seconds. Every test subject has... _become modern art_."
---
*- "BLAH BLAH BLAH NOTHING BUT WORTHLESS JIBA JABA" - THE STORM_*
_Panel 1:_ _VALKS, quiet. 2 seconds of silence. She swirls wine. Doesn’t drink. The calm is `00000` loading the nuke. Then..._
_VALKS, soft. Like to a lover:_ "You’re telling me..."
_Panel 2:_ _Wider. Her manicure nails don’t dig into the arm rest. They TAP. Once. Twice. The crystal decanter on her desk SHATTERS. No one touched it. Her control slipped. The lunatic shows._
_VALKIS, voice still soft but now with a tremor of RAGE underneath:_ "We’ve spent seven years and 800 billion dollars. Every stabilizer. Every dampener. Every containment protocol you people designed."
_Panel 3:_ _Eyes widen. Not seductive. FERAL. Six scientists’ cameras turn to static. BOSE’s face has compression artifacts. Karvos is praying to a coffee machine. The LAB is breaking because SHE is breaking._
_SFX:_ _KLANG_ _BZRT_ _REALITY.EXE NOT RESPONDING - LAB SIDE ONLY_
_VALKS, YELLING NOW, and her voice has 3 layers like a corrupted audio file:_ "And when I say I’m close, you start vomiting garbage right on the progress?! You’ve tried everything and FAILED!"
_Panel 4:_ _BOSE, shrinking in his screen. Age 51 → looks 80. His background is now the same room he’s calling from. He’s glitched into his own camera feed._
_BOSE:_ "N-No ma’am you don’t understand—"
_Panel 5:_ _VALKS leans into camera. The camera lens cracks. But her reflection has no pupils. And she’s SMILING again. The storm passed. The goddess is back. And that’s worse._
_VALKIS, back to a whisper. Seductive:_ "Tell me why I shouldn’t make you the next test subject in this very project, Bose. Maybe you'll have better luck than the guy in the suit?" _tilts head_ "Give me one good reason. I’ll wait."
*- THE REAL GOAL REVEALED*
_Panel 1:_ _BOSE, desperate. Last card. Points at M-257. Points at charts. Points at his own glitching face. Lab-side. Valkis watches from Geneva. Crisp. No glitch. Swirling red wine. Doesn’t drink._
_BOSE, voice cracking:_ "No ma’am you should be PLEASED! He IS the breakthrough! He’s pure CHAOS! But chaos without BALANCE is just... _gestures to Escher room_ ...that! We don’t need more human sacrifices! We need to _STABILIZE HIM_! If we can balance or correct his genome, we control reality itself!"
_Panel 2:_ _VALKS: Her hand TIGHTENS around the wine glass. Stem CREAKS. Then _SFX:_ _CRACK_ - The glass SHATTERS in her grip. Shards slice her palm. Blood wells instantly. Wine + blood mix. Splashes her $10k silk blouse. Red on red. Can’t tell which is which. She doesn’t flinch. Doesn’t look down. Doesn’t acknowledge the blood dripping from her fist onto the desk. _Drip... drip..._ For 1 panel, she sees her own reflection in the black screen, but older, tired, afraid. Then she blinks. Snaps back. Smiles. She HATES that she saw it. The crushed glass stays in her hand._
_SFX:_ _CRUNCH_ _Drip... drip..._
_VALKS, soft. Disappointed. Like talking to a bad dog. Ignoring the blood + wine running down her wrist:_ "Enough."
_Panel 3:_ _VALKS, leaning forward now. The seduction breaks. The lunatic leaks through. Spitting. Venom. Eyes wide. Blood + wine still dripping from her closed fist onto her desk. _Drip... drip..._ But she’s LISTENING now. That’s worse._
_VALKIS, voice sliding from honey to acid. Staring at Bose like the blood is HIS fault. Opens her hand slightly. Glass shards + blood visible. Doesn’t react to the pain:_ "Blah blah. Nothing but worthless jiba jaba." _Beat. She licks blood + wine off her thumb. Slow. Back to honey_ "_But_... you’re right about one thing, darling."
_Panel 4:_ _Cut to tank. Close on boy. SPECIMEN M. Age 10. Lab-side. The black ink inside forms a SLEEPING FACE, then a SCREAMING FACE. He HEARD everything. He UNDERSTANDS. Valkis watches from her screen. Blood-stained. Wine-stained. Smiles at him. Like he’s a prize. Her bloody hand resting on the desk._
_Caption Box:_ `NO REACTION. NO TEARS. NO HOPE. ONLY CHAOS.`
_Small text under:_ `AND HE’S TAKING NOTES.`
_Small text under that:_ `AND SO IS SHE.`
_Panel 5:_ _VALKIS, exhales. Calm returns. Monster reset. Adjusting a single strand of hair with two fingers. Slow. Sensual. Blood + wine stain on her blouse. On her hand. She doesn’t cover it. She owns it. She opens her palm. Glass shards fall. _tink tink_ Blood pools. She doesn’t wipe it._
_VALKIS, voice low. Like a secret between lovers. Like a threat between killers. Taps the blood + wine stain on her chest with a bloody finger:_ "I didn’t wait seven years for a perfect human, Dr. BOSE." _She closes her bloody fist again. Crushes the remaining shards to DUST. _CRUNCH_ No new reaction. No wince_ "I waited for a key." _Leans in, smile cold. Eyes eating him alive_ "He’s not Humanity 2.0. He’s _Reality’s Admin Password_." _Beat. She traces the blood on her lip. Tastes it_ "Your job isn’t to make him obey. It’s to make him _stable_. Before he breaks out for good." _Whispers_ "You have one week. Unlike Specimen M-257..." _opens her hand. Blood + glass dust. No wound anymore. It’s already closing. Inhuman_ "_you_ can be replaced." _Smiles. Sweet. Stained. Bleeding_ "Good luck, darling."
_SFX:_ _CLICK_ _Call ends. Screens go black._
---
*THE DECISION - BOSE’S IMPOSSIBLE TASK_* *[SEDUCTIVE LUNATIC AFTERMATH]*
_Panel 1:_ _Lab silent. Only bubbling tank. But the bubbles are now CUBES. Reality is still weak here. Valkis’s voice still echoes. Her "darling" lingers like perfume. Like wine. Like blood._
_Panel 2:_ _DR. KARVOS, Head of Ethics. Whispering. His shadow is 2 seconds behind him and it’s flipping him off. He’s not scared of M-257 anymore. He’s scared of HER. Of the blood she didn’t care about._
_KARVOS, staring at black screen where Valkis was. Remembering the blood dripping from her hand:_ "What do we do? She’ll kill us..." _looks at tank_ "...and he’ll _unmake_ us... but she’ll make it _hurt first_..." _looks at his own palm_ "...and smile through it."
_Panel 3:_ _DR. BOSE, looking at tank. At the boy. At the `11111` swirling. At his death sentence. At the last frame of her bloody, wine-stained hand frozen on his screen. Then he gets THAT look. The "I’m about to pull something out of my ass before she pulls my spine out with her bare, bleeding hands" look._
_BOSE, sweating. Voice barely a whisper. Like she might hear him through the dead call:* "...we don’t find a compatible host." _Beat. He looks at his own hands. They’re shaking. He makes a fist. Like hers. Like the blood_ "We _make_ one. We need BALANCE. If he’s pure chaos..." _looks at the blood + wine frozen on screen_ "...we need pure _order_. Something to cancel him out. To stabilize him before we lose control completely." _Beat. Terrified realization_ "To save ourselves. Before she leashes us both... and doesn’t even feel the teeth".](https://media.mangamaker.com/4f94096f-f5ec-4637-99a6-5d7619e583f4.png)
![# THE HIDDEN COST OF GIVING
### A visual research comic about blood donation, iron depletion and donor safety
## OVERALL CREATIVE BRIEF
Create a two-sided scientific educational comic / manga-style research abstract based on an MSc research project investigating whole-blood donation intensity, iron depletion and risk heterogeneity across ethnic groups.
The comic should feel like a **short human story that gradually becomes an epidemiological investigation**.
The reader should begin by following one fictional regular blood donor and believing that everything is straightforward:
“I donate blood. I feel fine. My haemoglobin is okay.”
The story should then reveal that haemoglobin does not tell the entire story about iron stores, introduce ferritin and cumulative donation exposure, and finally zoom out from the individual donor to a population-level epidemiological investigation.
The comic must communicate scientific information accurately but accessibly.
Do NOT portray blood donation as dangerous or discourage donation.
The central message is:
**Blood donation saves lives, but repeated donation can place different demands on donors' iron stores. Understanding donation intensity and differences in risk may help inform better donor protection.**
The visual style should be sophisticated scientific manga / graphic medicine rather than childish cartooning.
Use clean linework, expressive but realistic human characters, modern NHS-style blood donation environments, subtle medical diagrams and visual metaphors.
Use a consistent protagonist throughout the story.
---
# MAIN CHARACTER
## SAM — THE REGULAR DONOR
Create one fictional adult whole-blood donor named Sam.
Sam should look healthy, ordinary and approachable.
Sam is not visibly ill.
Sam should not be assigned a specific ethnic identity because the research later examines population-level ethnic heterogeneity.
Clothing should remain consistent throughout the comic.
Sam should initially appear confident and relaxed.
The purpose of Sam is to represent a donor experience, NOT to represent a particular ethnic group or an individual research participant.
---
# VISUAL METAPHOR
Use a recurring visual metaphor throughout the comic:
### IRON = a reserve or bank account.
Inside Sam's body, represent iron stores as a small symbolic “IRON BANK”.
The bank should gradually become less full as repeated donations occur.
Represent ferritin as the marker associated with the body's stored iron.
Represent haemoglobin separately as a red-cell / haemoglobin gauge.
IMPORTANT:
Do not imply that the comic's visual decrease represents a measured numerical percentage.
It is a conceptual visual metaphor only.
---
# SIDE ONE — THE DONOR'S STORY
## PANEL 1 — “I GIVE BLOOD.”
### Scene
Modern whole-blood donation centre.
Sam is sitting comfortably in a blood donation chair.
A whole-blood collection bag is visibly filling beside Sam.
The environment should look safe, professional and calm.
Sam looks relaxed and healthy.
### Speech bubble
SAM:
“I donate regularly. I feel fine.”
### Narrator box
“Regular blood donation saves lives.”
Then a smaller line:
“But what happens to the donor's iron stores?”
### Visual detail
Very subtly show a small glowing “IRON BANK” symbol inside Sam's body.
Do not explain it yet.
---
# PANEL 2 — “THE GREEN LIGHT”
### Scene
A member of the donation staff checks Sam's haemoglobin.
Show a simple medical screening interface.
The haemoglobin indicator reads:
“HAEMOGLOBIN ✓”
Sam receives the green light to donate.
### Speech bubble
STAFF:
“Your haemoglobin is above the donation threshold.”
SAM:
“Great.”
### Narrator
“But haemoglobin is only part of the story.”
### Visual composition
Show the haemoglobin gauge in the foreground.
Behind it, partially hidden, show the smaller “IRON STORES” gauge.
This creates the visual idea that two related but distinct things are being considered.
---
# PANEL 3 — ENTER THE BLOODSTREAM
### Transition
Zoom dramatically from Sam's body into the bloodstream.
The visual style changes into a beautiful scientific microscopic environment.
Show:
* red blood cells;
* iron;
* haemoglobin;
* an “IRON STORAGE” area represented by the symbolic iron bank.
### Narrator
“Iron is essential for making haemoglobin and red blood cells.”
Then:
“Ferritin is used as a marker of stored iron.”
### Iron Bank character
The iron-storage bank says:
“I’m the reserve.”
Do not make this childish; keep the metaphor visually sophisticated.
---
# PANEL 4 — THE FIRST DONATION
### Scene
Return to Sam donating blood.
Show the blood bag being collected.
Then transition visually from the blood leaving Sam's body to the iron bank.
### Narrator
“A whole-blood donation removes red blood cells — and with them, iron.”
### Visual
Before donation:
IRON BANK
🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙
After donation:
IRON BANK
🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙
Do NOT attach numerical values to the visual.
### Iron Bank
“We can rebuild…”
Small pause.
“…but replenishing iron stores takes time.”
---
# PANEL 5 — “AND THEN SHE COMES BACK.”
Do not change Sam's gender; use:
“AND THEN SAM COMES BACK.”
### Scene
A visual montage across time.
Show a calendar with multiple donation dates.
Donation 1.
Donation 2.
Donation 3.
Donation 4.
Donation 5.
The exact number of donations should be presented as an illustrative example, not as a claim about a threshold.
### Sam
“I’m still eligible.”
### Iron Bank
“But how much is left?”
### Narrator
“This is where donation intensity becomes important.”
Put the scientific term prominently:
DONATION INTENSITY
Underneath:
“Cumulative whole-blood donation exposure over time.”
---
# PANEL 6 — THE HIDDEN DIFFERENCE
This should be one of the most visually important panels.
Split the panel into two large gauges.
LEFT:
HAEMOGLOBIN
✓
“Within donation threshold”
RIGHT:
IRON STORES
↓
“Can become depleted”
Sam remains apparently well.
### Narrator
“A donor may feel well and meet haemoglobin requirements while iron stores are becoming depleted.”
Do not say that every donor will experience this.
The language must remain scientifically cautious.
### Large question at bottom
“So how does repeated donation affect iron depletion?”
---
# PANEL 7 — ONE DONOR BECOMES MANY
### Scene
Begin with Sam.
Then zoom out.
Sam becomes one donor among hundreds and thousands.
Create a large diverse population of fictional whole-blood donors.
Include variation in:
* age;
* sex;
* appearance;
* ethnicity;
* donation history.
### Narrator
“But one donor cannot answer a population-level question.”
### Researcher character enters
RESEARCHER:
“So I looked at the bigger picture.”
The crowd flows into a large epidemiological dataset.
---
# PANEL 8 — THE CENTRAL RESEARCH QUESTION
Make this panel visually clean and dramatic.
The researcher stands in front of a giant question mark.
### Main text
“DOES DONATION INTENSITY AFFECT THE RISK OF IRON DEPLETION?”
Then underneath:
“AND DOES THAT RELATIONSHIP DIFFER BETWEEN ETHNIC GROUPS?”
### Visual
Show:
DONATION INTENSITY
↓
IRON DEPLETION
And beside it:
ETHNICITY
↓
possible variation in risk
Do not depict a confirmed ethnic difference.
This is a research question, not a result.
---
# SIDE TWO — THE RESEARCH INVESTIGATION
The second side should visually shift from narrative storytelling to a scientific research investigation.
Maintain the manga aesthetic but use clean information design.
The reader should feel that they are now entering the researcher's study.
---
# PANEL 9 — “WHO DID WE STUDY?”
### Visual
Create a large funnel labelled:
“DONOR POPULATION”
At the top, show many donors.
The funnel filters the population.
Include:
WHOLE-BLOOD DONORS ✓
DONATION HISTORY ✓
FERRITIN / IRON DATA ✓
ADULT DONORS ✓
Then visually exclude:
PLATELET DONORS ✕
PLASMA DONORS ✕
### Narrator
“We focused on adult whole-blood donors with relevant donation and iron data.”
Do not add eligibility criteria that are not present in the final dissertation.
---
# PANEL 10 — “WHAT DID WE MEASURE?”
Create a scientific detective-board layout.
At the centre:
IRON DEPLETION
Connect it visually to:
DONATION INTENSITY
FERRITIN
HAEMOGLOBIN
Then show additional variables around the main relationship:
AGE
SEX
BASELINE HAEMOGLOBIN
DONATION TYPE
### Narrator
“We examined whether donation intensity was associated with markers of iron depletion while accounting for other relevant donor characteristics.”
Keep the wording cautious.
---
# PANEL 11 — THE STATISTICAL DETECTIVE
### Scene
The researcher stands in front of a large analytical board.
At the centre:
DONATION INTENSITY → IRON DEPLETION
But several other arrows enter the analysis:
AGE → IRON STATUS
SEX → IRON STATUS
BASELINE Hb → IRON STATUS
DONATION TYPE → IRON STATUS
### Researcher
“Before we attribute differences to donation intensity…”
“…we need to account for other factors.”
### Technical label
MULTIVARIABLE REGRESSION
Underneath in small text:
“Adjusted analysis”
### Visual metaphor
Represent multivariable regression as a transparent filter separating the different influences.
Do NOT turn this into a mathematical equation unless space permits.
The purpose is to communicate the analytical concept.
---
# PANEL 12 — THE ETHNICITY QUESTION
### Scene
Show a diverse group of whole-blood donors.
Above them:
“DOES RISK LOOK THE SAME FOR EVERYONE?”
Then create a visual interaction:
DONATION INTENSITY
×
ETHNICITY
↓
IRON DEPLETION
### Researcher
“We also explored whether the relationship between donation intensity and iron depletion differed between ethnic groups.”
### Technical label
“Donation intensity × ethnicity”
“Interaction”
Make this visually understandable even to a reader who has never studied statistics.
---
# PANEL 13 — THE DATA LIMITATION
This must be a serious scientific panel rather than a dramatic twist.
### Scene
The researcher looks at the donor dataset.
Show a large crowd of donor icons.
The population is visibly dominated by White donors, with substantially fewer donors from other ethnic groups.
### Researcher
“But there is an important limitation.”
### Narrator
“The dataset is overwhelmingly White.”
Then:
“This limits the strength and precision with which differences between ethnic groups can be interpreted.”
### Visual
Put a subtle warning symbol beside the dataset.
Do NOT portray the under-represented groups as “rare” or visually insignificant.
The message is about sample representation and statistical interpretability.
---
# PANEL 14 — “WHAT DO WE KNOW?”
Create a split-page visual.
LEFT SIDE:
WHAT WE CAN INVESTIGATE
✓ Donation intensity
✓ Ferritin / iron depletion
✓ Haemoglobin
✓ Donor characteristics
✓ Population differences
✓ Adjusted associations
RIGHT SIDE:
WHAT REMAINS UNCERTAIN
? Ethnic differences where groups are under-represented
? Generalisability
? The extent to which associations reflect causal effects
Use a calm scientific visual style.
This panel communicates scientific uncertainty rather than presenting the research as having a simple answer.
---
# PANEL 15 — RETURN TO SAM
### Scene
Return to the original donation centre.
Sam is sitting in the donation chair again.
The scene visually echoes Panel 1.
But now the reader can see a transparent overlay inside Sam's body:
RED BLOOD CELLS
HAEMOGLOBIN
IRON STORES
FERRITIN
DONATION HISTORY
### Sam
“So there’s more to donor health than whether I can donate today?”
### Researcher
“Yes.”
---
# FINAL PANEL — THE MESSAGE
Create a large, emotionally satisfying final image.
Sam leaves the blood donation centre.
Behind Sam is a large population of donors.
The blood donation centre remains positive and welcoming.
Do not portray donation as dangerous.
### Large headline
“SAFER DONATION ISN’T JUST ABOUT TODAY.”
### Subheading
“It is also about understanding how repeated donation affects donors over time.”
### Final research message
“Understanding donation intensity, iron depletion and risk heterogeneity may help inform more targeted approaches to donor protection.”
### Final small text
“Research question → Evidence → Limitations → Better donor protection”
---
# FOOTER
At the very bottom of the final panel, create a clean academic footer.
Include:
[STUDENT NAME]
MSc Applied Transfusion and Transplantation Science
University of the West of England
Research project:
“A population-based epidemiological investigation of donation intensity, iron depletion, and risk heterogeneity across ethnic groups.”
Add a small QR-code placeholder labelled:
“Read the full research”
Do not generate a fake QR code.
---
# ARTISTIC DIRECTION
STYLE:
Sophisticated medical manga / scientific graphic narrative.
Realistic anatomy where appropriate.
Expressive human characters.
Modern clinical environment.
Clean black or dark linework.
Professional academic presentation.
Subtle use of colour.
The comic should look suitable for presentation alongside a postgraduate biomedical research project.
Avoid childish cartoon aesthetics.
Avoid excessive fantasy.
Avoid gore.
Avoid dramatic hospital imagery.
Avoid portraying the donor as sick.
Avoid portraying blood donation negatively.
---
# VISUAL STORYTELLING PRINCIPLES
Use visual transitions between panels.
The most important transition is:
ONE DONOR
↓
BLOODSTREAM
↓
IRON STORES
↓
REPEATED DONATION
↓
MANY DONORS
↓
DATASET
↓
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
↓
POPULATION RISK
↓
DONOR PROTECTION
The visual story should therefore move from:
INDIVIDUAL → BIOLOGY → EXPOSURE → POPULATION → ANALYSIS → IMPLICATION.
The comic should not feel like fifteen disconnected illustrations.
Each panel should lead naturally into the next.
---
# IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC ACCURACY RULES
1. Do not claim that repeated donation inevitably causes iron deficiency.
2. Do not claim that haemoglobin screening is useless.
3. Do not claim that ferritin is routinely measured in every blood donor unless this is explicitly stated in the final research.
4. Do not invent numerical results.
5. Do not invent odds ratios, p-values, confidence intervals or effect sizes.
6. Do not state that one ethnic group has a higher risk unless this is supported by the actual study results.
7. Do not portray the fictional donor as an actual participant.
8. Clearly distinguish conceptual illustrations from actual study findings.
9. Do not imply causation if the study establishes only association.
10. The purpose of the comic is to communicate the research question, study approach, scientific rationale, uncertainty and donor-safety implications accurately.
---
# OVERALL MESSAGE
The reader should finish the comic understanding:
“Blood donation is valuable and generally safe, but repeated whole-blood donation creates an ongoing demand for iron.”
“Haemoglobin and iron stores are related but are not the same thing.”
“Donation intensity may help identify differences in iron depletion risk.”
“Those risks may not be identical across all donor groups.”
“Population-level research can investigate these relationships.”
“However, representation within the dataset affects how confidently differences between ethnic groups can be interpreted.”
“And the ultimate purpose is better-informed donor protection — not discouraging people from giving blood.”
